Overview: Grow Pittsburgh is seeking a Farm Assistant at Braddock Farms for the 2021 season. This is a full-time seasonal position primarily focused on growing and caring for crops as well as harvesting and packing them for markets. Responsibilities include:
Farm work can vary throughout the season; farm staff are "all hands on deck" and work together to get everything done.
Site Location: Braddock Farms, located at Braddock Avenue and 10th Street, Braddock, PA 15104
Braddock Farms Details: Braddock Farms is on one acre of land that was previously a vacant lot and is transitioning into its 15th growing season. We grow vegetables and berries using natural methods. There are four hoophouses and a greenhouse on the farm. In addition to the Farm Manager, the farm hosts a Farm Education and Outreach coordinator, a work-trade program, and many volunteer groups. The primary outlets for our produce are: the on-site Farm Store (open two days a week), another Grow Pittsburgh farm stand at Shiloh Farm, and neighborhood markets including Wilkinsburg, Homewood, and Hazelwood. Some produce is sold to consumers through the Harvie online farm stand. The farm hosts educational workshops and tours as well as the Urban Farmers in Training program with local youth. Braddock Farms also plays host to a variety of fun events such as the Annual Zucchini Festival and the Harvest Festival.
Timeline: This is an 8-month long position starting March 15, 2021, and ending on October 30, 2021.
Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, with potentially special events (Saturdays).
Compensation: $15/hour; Other benefits include: paid sick days, mileage reimbursement for work use of vehicle, and membership to the Garden Resource Center.
Requirements: One full season of growing experience on a vegetable farm is required. Those interested should be self-motivated, punctual and should enjoy working with people. They should also possess a strong work ethic, the ability to work in all weather conditions, the ability to work efficiently and independently and be detail-oriented. Braddock Farms is a public-facing farm; all staff is expected to be courteous and professional when interacting with the public. The Candidate must be able to work occasional Saturdays and special events, have a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation. It is required to have your Act 33, Act 34, and federal background clearances to be an employee at Grow Pittsburgh.
